Can I Get Married Online in Darwin?
Learn what parts of the marriage process can happen remotely and why the actual wedding ceremony in Darwin must still happen in person.
Australian law requires the marriage ceremony itself to happen with both parties, the celebrant, and two witnesses physically present at the same place.
That means you cannot get legally married in Darwin, the Northern Territory, or anywhere else in Australia:
- by video call
- fully online
- by proxy
What Can Happen Remotely?
Some preparation can happen remotely, including:
- early enquiries
- document checks
- planning conversations
- in some cases, NOIM witnessing by audio-visual link
What Still Has To Happen In Person?
Even with newer flexibility around the NOIM:
- the celebrant must meet separately and in person with each party before solemnising the marriage
- both parties must be physically present for the ceremony
- the celebrant must be physically present
- two adult witnesses must be physically present
If One of Us Is Overseas
If you are planning to marry in Darwin but one party is overseas:
- you may still be able to begin the paperwork process
- the NOIM may be able to be witnessed remotely or overseas by an authorised person
- both parties still need to be in the same physical place for the ceremony in Australia
