How a fast legal marriage works in Darwin
Step 1: Send Your Enquiry
Tell us what sort of simple marriage you want, where in Darwin or the NT you want it, and what timing you are aiming for.
Step 2: Lodge the NOIM
Your Notice of Intended Marriage must be lodged at least one calendar month before the marriage unless a prescribed authority approves a shortening of time. See the timing rules.
Step 3: Check Documents and Meet Separately
We confirm your ID, birth evidence, and any divorce or death documents. Current federal guidance also requires the celebrant to meet separately and in person with each party before the marriage is solemnised.
Step 4: Get Married
Meet with your two witnesses, say the required legal words, sign the documents, and you are married. The simple legal ceremony usually takes around five to 10 minutes.
Step 5: Registration and Certificate
You receive a ceremonial certificate on the day, we lodge the paperwork, and you can then order the official NT marriage certificate when registration is complete. Read the certificate guide.
Legalities
Marriage requirements in Darwin and the Northern Territory
The law is national, so the same federal marriage rules apply in Darwin as anywhere else in Australia.
You must usually be at least 18 to marry. If someone is 16 or 17, a court order and parental consent are needed before a marriage can happen. See who can marry.
You do not need to be an Australian citizen or permanent resident to get married in Darwin. Tourists, visa holders, and overseas couples can marry here if they meet the legal requirements. Read the overseas couples guide.
The NOIM must be lodged at least one month and no more than 18 months before the wedding. See the one-month notice guide.
Current federal guidance allows NOIM witnessing remotely by audio-visual link as well as in person, but the celebrant still needs to meet each party separately and in person before the ceremony. Read the NOIM guide.
You cannot get married online or by proxy. Both parties, the celebrant, and two adult witnesses must all be physically present at the same place for the ceremony. Read the online marriage guide.
You will need birth evidence, photo ID, and any divorce or death documents. If documents are not in English, certified translations may be required. See translation requirements.
A shortening of time is only possible in limited circumstances and must be approved by a prescribed authority. See how shortening of time works.
A registry office marriage and a celebrant-led Darwin marriage are both legal Australian marriages when done correctly. Compare the two paths.
