Types of Certificates

Ceremonial certificate

  • Given on the day by the celebrant
  • A keepsake of the marriage
  • Not the official government certificate used for legal proof

Official marriage certificate

  • Issued by the Northern Territory Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages
  • Used for name change, legal proof, passports, and official paperwork

Who Can Apply?

You can generally apply if you are:

  • one of the spouses
  • otherwise eligible under the NT rules
  • applying for a marriage that happened more than 75 years ago, if public access rules apply
